In 1953 a dream became reality.
At WACKER in Burghausen,
Germany, we pulled our first
hyperpure silicon crystal with a
diameter of 10mm. It was a
superb example of leading-edge
technology in Germany. Now,
manufacture of this high-tech
product is an everyday routine
at WACKER – in diameters up
to 300mm. Silicon has a long tradition at WACKER. Before the Second World War, WACKER was a major producer of ferrosilicon in Mückenberg, East Germany. When the war was over, WACKER left all of its sites in East Germany, returning to its roots in Burghausen. For a short time, silicon was forgotten.
